What are the requirements to run Family Diary ... ?

  • Before anything is installed it is necessary to have an installation of SQL Server on your server. If you do not have SQL Server 2005 installed the setup program will install this automatically. Once SQL Server has been installed the setup program will install the Family Diary Services on the server and create the database. You can then access the Family Diary service from any of the clients that are available. Additionally Windows Firewall rules will be set up to allow for access via either local network or the internet

Does Family Diary run on anything other than Windows Home Server ... ?

  • The Family Diary service is designed to run on Windows Home Server but can be run on any Windows Server, it will also run on Windows 7 but may require some manual configuration to do this. If the Windows Home Server addin is not installed then there is an additional configuration program with a shortcut on the Family Diary startup menu which will allow service configuration in the same way as the Windows Home Server addin.

How does the client connect to the service ... ?

  • There are two ways in which a client can connect. If the client is operating on a local network and the user has an account on the server, the client is automatically logged onto the service through windows security. If the user does not have an account on the server but they have an account created within the Family Diary database they will be able to log in using these credentials. It may be necessary to open port 8088 on your router to connect to the server from the internet.
