Lead Project Manager 1996 to 2002

Managed the implementation of HR and Payroll systems into major organisations across public and private sectors with budgets between £40,000 to £200,000. Including Organisations such as Wrexham Council, Skipton Building Society, Scarborough Building Society, Umbro International Ltd, Bon Marche Ltd, Ineos Acrylics UK Ltd, Boots Opticians, Granada Television, Argos Distributors and Vision Express.

  • Full life cycle management of an 18 month project to implement a healthcare HR system for Lothian University Hospitals. Managed a team of eight from both internal and customer resources. The software had to be implemented to a fixed price which meant strict control of changes to ensure the project stayed within budget. The plan was drawn up in conjunction with senior users, management and board members after a number of requirements meetings. Major software customisation required meticulous issue management; over 200 issues had to be dealt with during the design, development and implementation stages. Managed under the PRINCE2 method, the project was delivered on time and to budget. The intranet solutions were rolled out to over 2000 managers in over 14 sites. Subsequent benefits of the system were a redeployment of staff to form a new recruitment cell and a reduction in HR resources needed to maintain personal records making and annual wages bill saving of approximately £100,000.
  • Project managed the design, development and implementation of a packaged training system for a large solicitor in Newcastle to ensure compliance with Law Society regulations. Involved analysis of the customer requirements and bespoke changes of the Training System package to incorporate the new rules. Microsoft Business Solutions was able to secure three other deals totalling £375,000 of additional revenue as a direct result of the success of this project.
  • Project managed a multi site HR system for Wrexham Borough Council. The system underwent considerable bespoke work and the project spanned a period of two years. The original budget for the system was £120,000. After commissioning new change requests to the value of £60,000 were received to allow for interfacing to payroll and a schools record system. A team of five technical consultants, two HR consultants and two trainers ensured that the project was completed on time and to budget. The major benefit to them was a single point of entry of data which previously would have been keyed into as many as 3 other systems.
  • Managed up to twelve packaged and bespoke software projects at one time with values between £40,000 and £300,000.
  • Managed and mentored a team of 5 project managers in the implementation of HR and Payroll products in the northern business region (Coventry to Scotland)
  • Analysis, design and writing of specifications for the customisation of HR and Payroll products.
  • Had a major roll in developing project management strategy and best practice throughout the company based around the PRINCE2 method.
  • Identified data migration requirements and produced data migration specifications.
  • Scheduled resources in conjunction with peer group Managers.
  • Management of multi discipline project teams in a matrix management environment, dealing with resource conflicts with other teams and project managers.
  • Negotiated budget changes with clients to ensure client’s needs were met.
  • Organised and led presentations to customers at both board and user levels.
  • Liaised with customer project boards and third party suppliers.

Development Manager 1993 to 1996

  • Led a team of 3 contractors and 2 permanent staff in developing project costing software for the consumer market over the complete software lifecycle.
  • Mentored the team in software development practice and dealt with all disciplinary matters.
  • Successfully ported DOS based project management software to a Windows platform using Foxpro for Windows.
  • Coordinated customers and developers in beta testing of software prior to release.
  • Carried out configuration management of software builds.
  • Coordinated contractors in software testing.
  • Set up a five user Windows NT network including shared resources and internet access.
